Sea Conditions in Buzzards Bay

Monday, August 18th, 2008

I often hear comments from other sailors, whether in person, from other blogs, sailing web sites, etc, how difficult sailing in Buzzards Bay is. Primary due to the tough sea conditions that can build up in the Bay. I just finished reading one sailing blog about a cruising couple sailing the up the New England coast dreaded entering Buzzards Bay. Well, I’ve been sailing here for a number of years and all I can say is: I absolutely agree. (more…)

Lake Tashmoo encore

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

In my earlier blog entries I wrote that Janet and I spend the last few days of our vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. So, of course, we went to our favorite harbor on the Island: Lake Tashmoo.

The picture above was taken on Friday after we anchored on the far side of the harbor across from the town docks. As you can see, there were no other boats near us at anchor. By Saturday mid-day we were surrounded by other crusing sailboats. (more…)

Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound from the air

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

While I was looking for a picture of Woods Hole for the previous blog on navigating Woods Hole, I stumbled across some old pictures I took from the air of Buzzards Bay, Vineyard Sound, and the Islands. Rafi Safarian and I flew to the Vineyard in a Cessna that Rafi rented for the day. Rafi’s a pilot (among his many other interests and talents). This trip was at least ten years ago and I had long forgotten about these pictures. Thought I’d post a few.

The picture above is of Buzzards Bay with Mattapoisett Harbor in the center and West Island off to the left in the distance. (more…)

Navigating the Woods Hole passage

woods hole

A week ago, Janet and I sailed to Martha’s Vineyard. The morning that we planned to leave, we ran into engine trouble that delayed our departure for several hours. Turned out to be as simple as the the battery cables weren’t tight enough and not enough current was flowing to start the diesel. Anyways, the delayed departure caused a problem with our scheduled passage through Woods Hole.

Our new sun awning

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

I had to post a picture of our new sun awning for Galatea. I took this picture of Janet sitting under the awning from the cabin looking out into the cockpit.  As Janet has commented, how did we ever live without this. It keeps us cool during the day and dry during the rain. We love it. Makes living on the boat so much more enjoyable.  And I have to say, sitting under this awning during the day, reading a book, and watching life go on in the harbor, is true serenity. And I should give credit to Eastern Sails of Mattapoisett for making our great new awning. Thanks Ron and Sylvia!!!

As I mentioned, during our vacation we went sailing a few times. Taking friends and family members out for daysails when the weather permitted.

This picture above is Janet with Carol and her husband Chris. Janet and Carol are old, old friends who spent their summers together as teenagers in Cresent Beach. (more…)
